Barbara Kingsolver, in discussing her novel touching on climate change, the differences in beliefs, and coming to a common understanding: "we are all less rational than we think--we take our truths from people we trust...we have a kind of tribal affiliation with our beliefs so first we decide who are your people, who can you trust and then absorb from them.....so how do we talk across these divides?" i have always loved her work from the beginning not only because she has beautiful prose, cool scientific facts, insightful protrayals of scenes and characters etc. but through it all there is always a foundation of compassionate regard for everyone and everything, that softens differences and allows us a capacity to welcome a glimpse beyond what we know and believe.
