Barbara and I spent some time this weekend in Gallia and Jackson counties in Southern Ohio. Not only is this a beautiful area, it is also an area rich in history. Gallipolis is one of the oldest European settlements in Ohio. Note the marker on the gate of Mound Hill Cemetery honoring Revolutionary War heroes! And the commanding view of the Ohio River from the Cemetery illustrates why strategic fortifications were erected there and garrisoned until well after the Civil War. River boats still dock from time to time at the Gallipolis waterfront park which itself is overlooked by the citys main park on the banks above the river.
