@Barnaby_Joyce Deaths in transit are not rare Barnaby Joyce and everyday Australians are sickened. We all know this investigation will amount to nothing and will result in no penalties or punishments for the exporter. We have no faith in DAFF investigations and unfortunately, due to Labor reneging on their promise of an Independent Animal Welfare Office, there is no where to go to get any sort of justice for the animals that suffer in this trade. Well, these animals are not alone and the government and this trade will be held accountable, everyday Australians will continue to demand an end to this trade, our voice is just getting louder and louder and we are going no where. Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says an investigation is underway into the deaths of dozens of Australian cattle during export to Kazakhstan. The Agriculture Department has confirmed cattle died during a long-haul flight from Melbourne to Kazakhstan in late October. The Department says it is working with the exporter to determine the cause of death. Local media in Kazakhstan reported 49 cattle died during the long-haul flight - as a result of suffocation. Mr Joyce has provided a statement, saying the Department will release the findings of its investigation once it is complete. In the past two years, nearly 4 million animals have been exported to 16 countries, according to the Minister. Mr Joyce says transport deaths of this kind are rare. News of the deaths comes a week after allegations by an animal rights group that thousands of Australian sheep may soon face inhumane slaughter in the Middle East. Animals Australia claimed the sheep were being sold to Jordan and Kuwait away from supply chains, which would constitute a breach of live export rules. The Department of Agriculture is investigating those claims abc.net.au/news/2013-10-24/investigation-into-deaths-of-australian-export-cattle/5044348
