Disclaimer – the views in this article are those of the author’s alone. A Mother Jones article announcing that the Philippines was set to use a deadly chemical banned in the EU and the US, to contain a coconut tree insect infestation, triggered panic within the Chemical Syndicate campaigning for its use, according to sources within the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) requesting anonymity. They may have finally realized that the global market for coconut oil may suddenly disappear when importers find out the Philippines Is using the deadly chemical injected into the trunk of millions of coconut trees nationwide. Mother Jones is a noted US magazine with millions of readers. Syndicate leaders from PCA, the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) and a host of government agencies backing them up, began issuing media statements, washing their hands of the whole affair, and stating they were not to blame. Protestors say that Syndicate will not easily give up its chemical campaign (it may withdraw now then revive later secretly when the controversy dies down) because of the massive profits it will give to Syndicate elements. The real reason the chemical campaign was stalled was the contractors implementing its use have not yet given their liquidation reports, says a PCA insider. If the funds have been pocketed, those reports will never be given. SCM says Withdrawal is Questionable Vin Lava of the Save the Coconut Movement (SCM), however, is challenging the ‘withdrawal’ as questionable if not temporary. Lava says the public must remain vigilant, and the signature campaign must go on. (Please join the signature campaign - pca.da.gov.ph/pr081414a.php.) We quote Lava here in full – “They havent stopped using Starkle (brand name of the chemical) yet. We were at a symposium on the CSI held in connection with the Coco Week celebration at the Megatrade Hall last Sunday, and they talked about the trunk injections. We also asked why the PCA only exempted organic farms and those undergoing organic certification from Starkle injections and they couldnt answer coherently. This is what the PCA website says about it: “Coconuts cultivated in certified organic farms were not spared by the aggressive, leaf-sucking scale insects. To protect the organic status of coconut farms which supply organic coconut-based food products in the local and foreign markets, only the standard pruning of infested fronds and the application of Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) − certified organic and/or botanical pesticides will be applied. Thus, the Organic Cocolisap Treatment Protocol is implemented in certified organic coconut farms and on those farms which are in the process of accreditation as organic farms. pca.da.gov.ph/pr081414a.php “If they insist on exemption for the organic farms only, to the detriment of other farms who do not want to use Starkle, there might be grounds for a graft case here.” Vin Lava (SCM) There is no more Threat The Coconut Scale Insect thrives in dry hot weather. Since Glenda and many Low Pressure Areas, the infestation has died down, and some scientists say there is no more or very little need for human intervention, all the more saying we do not need deadly chemicals anymore. It was the false sense of ‘urgency’ articulated by the Syndicate that made Presidential Assistant Kiko Pangilinan opt for the chemical option. *********************************************** Previous Article COCO-CHEM USE LEAKED TO GLOBAL MEDIA Warning to Pinoy and PCA of Dire Consequences This comes as a warning to President Aquino and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) of the dire consequences to our multi-billion dollar coconut export industry that if our copra and coconut oil buyers abroad learn we are injecting toxic chemicals into the trunks of our coconut trees, as what PCA is doing and intends to do one a massive in spite of repeated warnings, it is the beginning of the end. When export buyers learn they may get toxic coconut products, proven or not, safe or not, our global market will disappear in the blink of an eye. YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF THE INDUSTRY THAT WOULD INDUCE FAMINE ON A MASSIVE SCALE AMONG THE 25 MILLION MARGINALS THE INDUSTRY SUPPORTS. IF THIS HAPPENS, MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOULS. CALLING ON PRESIDENT AQUINO, KIKO PANGILINAN, REY VELASCO, AND ERLENE MANOHAR OF TASK FORCE SAGIP TO PLEASE STOP THIS NON-SENSE OF THE USE OF A TOXIC CHEMICAL BANNED IN THE EU AND US. Mother Jones, a prestigious magazine in the US, having millions of readers, has quoted a GREENPEACE press release on PCA’s highly toxic Coconut Chemical. (See link below.) Right now, Mother Jones is trying to contact Kiko Pangilinan about the looming mega-disaster worse than a hundred tsunamis, in terms of taking out lives. THE US FATS AND OIL INDUSTRY HATES COCONUT OIL, THE PRIME COMPETITOR OF THEIR CORN OIL. IT HAS NOW THE OPPORTUNITY TO DESTROY OUR COCONUT OIL MARKET WITH BLACK PROPAGANDA, AS THEY HAVE DONE BEFORE, CLAIMING COCONUT OIL IS BAD FOR THE HEART CONTRARY TO M.I.T. FINDINGS THAT IT HAS GOOD CHOLESTEROL AND HAS CURATIVE ELEMENTS. RIGHT THIS MINUTE, THE FIRE IS SPREADING QUICKLY. WE MUST STOP THE CHEMICAL OPTION RIGHT AWAY AND ISSUE A GLOBAL MEDIA PRESS RELEASE THAT WE HAVE STOPPED DOING SO, TO CONTAIN THE URGENT SITUATION.
