Keep plugging away, don’t get flustered and pick your opportunities. That’s what the No. 5-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns did on Tuesday night, beating Nicholls State 5-1 in front of 3,430 fans at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Ryan Wilson pitched six strong innings, but the UL bats could not take advantage of baserunners in scoring position. The Cajuns finally broke through for runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and reliever Matt Plitt locked down the Nicholls batters to secure the win. UL picked up its eighth win in a row for the best 20-game start since 2000 when the Cajuns started that season 19-1. UL looks to sweep the home-and-home series as the Cajuns head to Thibodaux today against the Colonels. After coming off of a weekend which saw UL score 39 runs in three games, it was a refresher to see the Cajuns win a tight game when runs were not as plentiful as it was at ULM. “This comes back to the beginning of the year, when we learn to win different ways,” Robichaux said. “Now we get into certain games like this and we don’t get spooked. “ Wilson threw six innings while giving up only one run on three hits and striking out six Colonel batters. “Just one of those days when everything is working my way,” he said. After retiring Nicholls State (10-11) in order the first two innings, the Colonels got a run across as second baseman Phillip Lyons hit a RBI single that scored first baseman David Zorn. But after that, Wilson retired nine of his next 13 batters he faced. “We knew two things were probably going to happen. His ERA was down, and when you come off of a weekend like we had, scoring the runs that we scored, usually your next game, runs will be at a premium,” Robichaux said. “(Wilson) came out and did a good job for us tonight and being able to keep the game close.” Nicholls State pitcher Mike Hanchar kept UL (18-2) at bay in his five innings of work, holding the Cajuns to three hits while walking two and striking out four. The only threat the Cajuns gave him was when outfielder Caleb Adams hit a triple to left field with one out, but Hanchar got out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout to left.
