Baseball can be a cruel and humbling game. Tonight for the San Francisco Giants and their fans (like me!) it was a pre-Halloween nightmare. Such a blowout you could almost laugh it off as a sick joke. Except that the Giants could have won the World Series tonight, and instead they face a final showdown with the Royals in game 7 in Kansas City. This has been a wild series between two Wild Card teams. Only one game has been close, Game 3, which Kansas City won, 3-2. How can a team like the Giants lose to the Royals 0-10 after beating them 7-1, 11-4 and 5-0? Its baseball, and its all about the pitching...and luck. In two games the Royals were not able to touch the Giants ace, Madison Bumgarner. But they certainly know how to knock out Jake Peavy. And tonight the Royals got a strong game of shutout pitching from their own Ace Ventura. A normal sized guy, 511, 180 lbs. from the Dominican Republic who can throw 100 mph, accurately. I tip my cap to him. The disaster went down early in a brutal 7-run 2nd inning when Peavy fell victim to a series of bloop fly balls and fielding miscues. The Giants outfielders were playing too deep. Even the reliever Petit, who won Game 4, failed to stop the damage. The Giants had a chance to strike back immediately in the top of the 3rd when Ventura loaded the bases on three one-out walks. But Buster Posey, uncharacteristically, failed to deliver, hitting into a devastating double play. The rest of the game was merely an afterthought. The Royals picked up 3 more stray runs -- one of them another home run given up by Strickland. With home field advantage, the Royals now have the odds ever so slightly in their favor. Will tomorrow be a tense, tight game, or another blowout? Itll be a heartbreaker for whoever loses. My condolences, in advance, to the people of Kansas.
