Baseball notes and updates: Giancarlo Stanton signed a 13-year $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins. He could have signed for more, but took less money so that his team could use that money to sign others to make the Marlins a stronger team. The south Florida team recently added Dee Gordon, Martin Prado, Mat Latos, Dan Haren and also signed Japan’s great Ichiro Suzuki. A number of changes to speed up Major League Baseball and make it more watchable are being considered by the new Baseball Commissioner. Here are a number of those new considerations: Time limits on pitching getting the ball and throwing it. Number of times a manager or coach can visit the mound. Banning the defensive shift in the infield for pull hitters and the other items mentioned are being discussed by the new Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. He replaced Bud Selig who spent 1992 to 2014 as the Commissioner. Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez needs only seven more homers to catch Willie Mays on the homerun list. According to various sources he expects a bonus for completing the task, but the New York Yankees said he does not have that in their contract with him. He was not granted a face-to-face meeting the Yankee brass. They expect him to compete for a job next month during Spring training. Rodriguez is not guaranteed a job. He was quoted as saying he cannot compete without the use of PEDs. Raul Mondesi Jr. has been declared one of the top baseball prospects this year. J.J. Picollo, the VP and assistant GM for the Kansas City Royals, said that Mondesi is a five tool player for the Royals who made it to the 2014 World Series. Mondesi is the son of Raul Mondesi who was the 1994 Rookie of the Year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dominican Republic native is currently a mayor in his country. Bill Monboquette, who played for the Boston Red Sox and later served as a scout, passed away on Jan. 25 of complications from leukemia at age 78. The former pitcher pitched a no-hitter in 1962 and also won 20 games for Boston in 1963. He later played for the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.
