Based on Gini index figures…the United States of America — the land of opportunity — does have one of the most uneven income distributions in the developed world. Iceland tops the list as the most egalitarian. Top 5: Chile, Mexico, Turkey, US, and Israel.” Really upsetting! The US has slipped to pre-WW II levels of income equality. The flip side is, in countries like Spain, Portugal and Greece, whose Gini index was better, nearly everyone is poor. The average American still lives better than the overwhelming majority of the world’s population (Before counter posting, remember there are 200 countries in the world.) But the increase in Gini index is demonstrated in such embarrassing facts as the plight of Cleveland or the existence of Detroit.
