Based on a comment I wrote with regards to the war on crypto David Cameron announced... Cameron didnt express himself clearly because he doesnt understand the tech. The problem (as seen by the security services) is that end to end crypto (ie. encrypted on one phone and decrypted on another) has no central point to tap. HTTPS (SSL and TLS) are not end to end crypto as the data is decrypted on a central server, but since most people arent up on tech, it appears that it is a war on ALL crypto... However, even if the envisaged ban goes through, very few end to end crypto apps are by UK companies so there will still be ready access to them and most people wont actually know or care about this law they are breaking. In addition, criminals and terrorists generally dont pay much heed to legality of applications, so the only people this is going to actually hurt is normal people - making them easier to tap and gather intel on. My guess is that the advisors know this and that is the actual goal. Not some purported war on terror. This is about as effective as the coalitions austerity cuts which have only hurt the poorest of the population and by their own goals of reducing the deficit are a total failure - we are likely to be massively over the targets according to some figures...
