Based on the 2012 General Appropriations Act, the President had a staggering travel subsidy of P942,000 per day; the Vice President, P45,000; the 23 senators, P854,000; the 278 congressmen, P1.7 million; and the 15 justices of the Supreme Court, at least P392,000, the workers’ group said. Even Secretary Joseph Abaya of the Department of Transportation and Communication, which oversees the MRT and LRT operations, enjoyed a daily travel subsidy of P180,000 in 2012, PM pointed out. These travel expenses are not recorded as subsidies but as privileges, but for all intents and purposes, they are taxpayers’ subsidies, Fortaleza said.
