Based on what I see at the health club day-after-day, 95% of all those exercising are overdoing it with cardio machines and new research shows they could be doing way more harm than good. BUT, I still advocate getting some aerobic work; fast paced walking or steady state "aerobic" cardio a FEW times a week to help keep all your metabolic systems conditioned and responding....and focusing on resistance training for the rest of the week to kick your fat burning into high gear.
