Basics and Practice Mr. Sawamatsu, the father of Kazuko and grandfather of Naoko Sawamatsu, was a famous tennis face in Japan. I was his guest when together we attended a national junior tournament in Japan. Everyone knew him. His famous tennis face was court-side for two generations of televised matches. In 1975 his daughter, Kazuko, won Wimbledon doubles and twenty years later his granddaughter, Naoko, was ranked number fourteen in the world. At the time, I was traveling to five Japanese cities to explain and demonstrate effective and efficient ways to develop tennis players. Finally, at the end of the trip I asked our translator to ask Mr. Sawamatsu, How did you develop two champions? To my surprise he answered in English. His answer certainly was a summary of the message I was trying to convey. I will never forget the two words he said loudly six times. Basics, basics, basics. Practice, practice, practice.
