Basketball: Former Regis Jesuit High School basketball star Bud Thomas and his Mercer University teammates are going dancing as the Bears secured an automatic berth in the NCAA mens basketball tournament with a victory over Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun Conference championship game Sunday. Its been a big season for Thomas, who helped Regis Jesuit to two Class 5A boys state basketball championships before he graduated in 2010, as he set a Mercer record by making 9 3-pointers in a game and also passed the 1,000-point mark for his career. Grandview grad Eric Garcia could also get a chance to play in March Madness if his Wofford University team can defeat Western Carolina University Monday night in the Southern Conference title game.
