Basketball Speed! I watched the Pacers vs Heat game last night and I simply focused on one player at a time for an entire defensive possession. Several things occur that I have been endorsing my entire career... 1. Constant repositioning of the feet on defense. The player guarding the ball simply moves the feet reactively to meet the demands of the play. If he has to shuffle right or left or open his hips to use a crossover to regain orientation quick explosive angles are created so elastic energy can be released and quickness gained. 2. Stay in the Tunnel. You dont see the players moving up and down when locking in defensively. They move the feet, legs, hips quickly to create push off or deceleration angles while they stay level. This allows for great quickness. 3. When they shuffle fast the front side opens up. I have said it before and will say it again, “The body does what is most efficient!” When the front side opens (externally rotates) it allows the player to use stronger more biomechanically sound positions to aid in shuffling. 4. When there was a turnover or a fast break situation a player went from a standstill to a full out acceleration, the arms drove the movement. The arms swing big and long in the first couple steps to add coordination to the longer more powerful leg drive in the first few steps. The reason it is longer is because the body is trying to overcome stationary mass and get moving so it takes more force over a longer period of time to get moving. Once the body is moving, the time of force reduces and the quickness of movement increases. Fun to just watch and learn! Train Smart!
