Bassey Albert’s Senate bid: A timely intervention Politics is dynamic in nature, thus it requires dynamism on the part of players involved to enable one properly fit into its schematics. The dynamic nature of Akwa Ibom politics has been responsible for the overall development of the state economically and politically in recent times. One of the few individual that has acknowledged political dynamism in Akwa Ibom is: Obong Bassey Albert (OBA), who sees politics as a game of numbers and interest. OBA has elevated politically to become a force to reckon with as far as politics of Uyo Senatorial District (USD) and Akwa Ibom state is concerned. His growing political structure sounds mystical, but in its unique sense commensurate with his massive contributions to the political development and stability of the state over the past couple of years. As nominations for various political offices kicks off nationwide on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, OBA has been tipped by political gladiators within and outside the state to clinch the senatorial seat of Akwa Ibom North East in the nomination and futher win the general elections. There is an exponential projection that he is billed to become one of the most successful senators of the federal republic of Nigeria. The senatorial ambition of Obong Bassey Albert is anchored on the collective will of Akwa Ibom people to ensure his continued contribution to the development of our democracy and empowerment of the people. Following the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to officially zone Governorship of the state to Eket senatorial district (ESD), OBA as a good team player, is one of the very few persons from USD that yielded to the position of the NWC, thus deferring his gubernatorial ambition. Despite the huge criticism by many in recent days, political stakeholders that are in consonant with the dynamics of the game, see Obong Albert’s decision as key to sustenance of peace in the various ethnic divisions of the state. Many have hailed his decision to obey the National hierarchy of the party as a huge sacrifice that was necessary to ensure equity, justice and fair play. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been strong calls with respect to Bassey Albert’s position as regards the 2015 Governorship of the state. OBA has been the bridge between various arguments and permutations as regards recent political developments. OBA as a modest politician, despite calls from a large section of the state for him to defect to another political party, has decided to show loyalty by sticking with the ruling party. The sacrifice made by Mr. Albert for the development of our democracy cannot be overemphasized. Thus it is very significant for the people to see things from his own perspective and apply caution in individual and collective actions as regards his position. In the midst of growing political confusion and uncertainty, Obong Bassey Albert has been the factor responsible for the unity of interest groups within the PDP cycle in the state. This could be evident in his recent engagement of stakeholders in talks to critically analyse with facts, why the PDP NWC’s position should be respected. His sense of humility, courage and dedication to the sustenance of the nation’s democracy has led to the people of USD calling on him to represent them at the red chambers in the next political dispensation. In the past couple of days, more than one hundred groups under different political structures have declared support for Obong Bassey Albert to emerge senator of representing Uyo Senatorial District in the 2015 general elections under the platform of the PDP. The desire of USD people to persuade Mr. Albert to represent them in the senate is borne out of his overwhelming political structure and contributions to the development of the state from his days in the private sector. Obong Bassey Albert is characterized with human capital development strides and has over the years empowered thousands of Akwa Ibom sons and daughters at home and abroad. This is one sure quality that has distinguished him from many others. As an individual with capacity to develop others, there is a positive projection that Obong Bassey Albert when elected senator of the federal republic will attract meaningful development not just to the people of Uyo Senatorial District, but also to Akwa Ibom people at large. Political pundits are already relishing the prospect of seeing Obong Bassey Albert at the fore front of Nigeria’s politics. According to an independent research conducted recently, OBA has been identified as the bridge needed to establish a unique relationship between the legislature and masses empowerment. A gesture that has rapidly declined in USD over the years. In his private capacity, OBA has embarked on massive award of scholarships to Akwa Ibom sons and daughters. This is evidence that he need not to be taught how to empower the people educationally, since this has been an integral part of his service to humanity. Similarly, Obong Albert has been deeply involved in empowerment of women across the state. This led to his adoption by market women in Akwa Ibom state as their sole candidate for the Guber election. There is a similar projection that as senator of the federal republic, OBA will ensure continued empowerment of Akwa Ibom women through provision of micro credit facilities and initiation of programs capable of sustaining economy of families. It is of note that Akwa Ibom people desire not just voices in the national assembly, but persons that will attract meaningful development and empowerment to the people. This can only be achieved by sending persons with massive human capital development and empowerment strides to the green and red chambers. The call by Uyo Senatorial district stakeholders and political stakeholders on Obong Bassey Albert to head for the red chambers to form part of the 8th senate of the federal republic of Nigeria has been hailed by many within and outside the state as a timely intervention and a true demonstration of equity and fair play, given Mr. Albert’s contributions to the development of the state and its people in the past decade or so. Uyo Senatorial district and Akwa Ibom people, having seen the need to get empowered beyond borders, let us individually and collectively join hands to ensure Obong Bassey Albert gets elected to the 8th senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for massive empowerment of the people, effective representation and continued development of our political dynasty.
