Battalion Chief Steve Leach turned on his dash cam in Chief-6 (The Battalion Chiefs vehicle) this morning responding to 36 Northern Ave at 2:00 am. As you can see the entire rear of the structure is on fire, the attic is well involved and extension into the apartments on the 2nd and third floors. If you watch close as Chief Leach drives by you will see police officers leading occupants off of the upper floors as the Battalion Chief vehicle drives by. There were 23 people in the building at the time of the fire. Some made it out on their own, some were aroused by Augusta Police Officers and others were rescued by Augusta Firefighters. This was a 3-Alarm fire with Augusta, Togus, Gardiner, Winthrop, Chelsea and Vassalboro to the scene. Winslow, Hallowell and Vassalboro provided City Coverage. Delta Ambulance set up in the Mill Park parking lot with three ambulances to treat and transport the injured occupants. There were 7-people transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation, hypothermia, and minor burns. The Red Cross has provided temporary housing and essential needs. Ash from the fire covered the west side of the City. Some schools cancelled outside recess due to the ash. An unbelievable effort by the first arriving firefighters and police officers saved lives. Thanks so much to all of the agencies that helped out.
