Battery cage farms are the norm, not a myth, and certainly a part of the 99% of livestock which are factory farmed in the U.S.--my friend John Sakars rescues 9 hens to Vegan homes just last year in 2013 and shows what its like inside a battery cage farm. https://youtube/watch?v=UBQUTMSRK8w#t=118 The chickens undergo horrendous suffering, debeaking without anesthesia (which is like breaking your bones, they are live and full of nerve endings), separation from family, forced molting and starvation for more eggs, live with no room to turn around in cages that cause feet deformities, often experiencing organ failure and heart attacks in a dark, ammonia-filled concentration camp with the smell of feces, urine, and dead birds burning the lungs, while the male chicks born to breeder hens are ground alive or suffocated in bags at birth after hatching because the meat and egg industries deem them a non-profitable by-product. When spent, they go to slaughter with millions of chickens having their throats slit while conscious and more afterwards boiled alive per year, as birds are exempt from the Humane Methods of Slaughter act (peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/factory-farming/chickens/). Chickens are the most widely abused animal on the planet (see the UN FAO food balance sheets. The good news is that animal flesh consumption has been going down across the board for every type of animal victim for the last decade--that is, other than chickens, whose consumption is still increasing--not good news for the chickens.). Given the chance, they will re-eat their own eggs for lost nutrients as the egg-laying is a huge calcium loss to the chicken and will stop laying eggs when their nest is full. They have been genetically modified to produce more eggs than their bodies ever need: it is not their job to be exploited. And eggs are part of a chickens ovulation cycle (yes, an induced one.). We can and will undo these atrocities. See humanemyth.org
