Battle formations like this are what makes the Roman Legion better than Spartans in my honest opinion. The Legion could take on more enemies in smaller groups without using a bottleneck to funnel enemy soldiers into in order to make their numbers count for nothing. On the side of the movie The Eagle, I wish it had more of this. I was also inaccurate to instate that a broken leg would end a Centurions career. Only a regular soldier was allowed to retire from the Legion, if you were an officer, such as a Centurion you fought in the Legion until you died, even if you lived to be an old man.
