Battle scenes are difficult to write, at least for me. And especially in romance. If I was writing another genre, I could spend more time on it, but battle isnt the focus of a romance. It, however, works well to amplify external conflict because it literally is THE prime example of conflict. I try to stick to the basics and move on though I do a fair amount of research before hand. When I wrote the one battle scene in the beginning of RADIANCE between the Kai and Beladine mercenaries, I chose to have Brishen fight using a long knife/hand ax pairing. Its a lethal combination, especially in close, hand-to-hand combat. Nothing elegant about it, but its a style thats fast, agile and gets the job done. Finding live action examples of sword fighting is actually pretty easy. A lot of historical re-enactors are resurrecting this martial art such as ARMA. The knife/ax combo? Havent yet found one of those. However, theyre in the movies. Movie battles are less about accuracy and more about cinematic show-stoppers. Im okay with that. I just take it with a grain of salt. The following two are probably the best examples Ive come across of how Brishen would use the knife and the axe in tandem in battle. Last of the Mohicans ambush scene - watch minute 4:00 through 4:35 The Patriot tomahawk scene - watch minutes 2:04 through 3:29 https://youtube/watch?v=CLHOSVolRIs https://youtube/watch?v=F-BQi0JjY2w
