Bauchi APC battles with internal crisison November 29, 2013 / in Politics 12:00 am By Suzan Edeh THE dream of unseating the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, by the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2015 governorship election in Bauchi State, appears threatened as a result of internal crisis rocking the party. For a party that is yet to find its foot in the state, the development is regarded as threatening by party faithful. At the moment, Bauchi APC is contending with internal squabbles resulting from the emergence of two factions of the party. The event which was expected to have produced executive members, ended up factionalizing the new party—a situation analysts described as messy. It was gathered that hell was let loose at the convention when armed thugs invaded the the Zaranda Hotel venue and chased away the party cheiftians, while many were injured. An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard that some elders led by Senator Mohammed attempted to appoint themselves party leaders against the wish of members. The source said, “we were at the middle of the function when the armed thugs infiltrated the gathering and unleashed mayhem as several faithful were injured while trying to escape the attack. One of aggrieved factions of the party which is not satisfied with the method the party was employing to pick its candidate was behind the crisis” Instructively, he noted that Sen Mohammed was nominated as interim state chairman, while Dr Yakubu Leme, Alhaji Garba Gardi and Ali Wakili emerged as secretary, treasurer and publicity Secretary respectively. This development, it was gathered, was rejected by most party members, who claimed that the process that produced them was not credible. In this regard, the source added: ‘’The party members were in support of the idea of producing an independent candidate to be made interim chairman, but immediately after the nomination , the other faction led by Senator Suleiman Nazif Gamawa rejected the list and condemned the process.’’ Indeed, those opposed to the emergence of the new executive hinged their grouse on the ground that anyone with a political ambition should not be part of the caretaker committee. Those in the camp of Sen Nazif include; Alhaji Sani Mallami, former All Nigeria Peoples Party Chairman in the state, Alhaji Baffa Tafida, ex- Chairman of defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Alhaji Aliyu Saidu former Chairman of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Others are; Alhaji Isa Missau, Alhaji Ibrahim Zailani, Alhaji Abdulmuminu Muktar, Garba Malu Chiroman Shira, Hon Aliyu Gibi,Hon Salisu Sabo. This group is disposed to the choice of Col Hameed Ali ( rtd ), who emerged interim leader before the convention. Commenting on the development, a party chieftain, Captain Bala Jibrin (rtd), regretted that the convention which was supposed to have produced party leaders, was disrupted by thugs. “The thugs were led by someone who I personally know and respect, but for security reasons I will not disclose his name. He is opposed to the election and the entire nomination process. We condemn this treacherous act in its totality and will report to the national headquarters what happened during the election, but that is the game of Politics. A new date will be announced later to elect the interim leadership of the party, ” Jibrin noted. Additionally, he said, ‘’it is quite unfortunate that the attempt to inaugurate the leadership of the party in the state was frustrated. This was the same thing that happened in the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC) during the 2011 election and we are supposed to learn from our past mistakes”.
