Bayelsa: Staff to shut poly over murder of colleague: NOVEMBER 21, 2013. - The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State chapter has threatened to shut down academic activities in the school if the killers of the financial secretary of the union, Frank Moses, are not apprehended and prosecuted accordingly. National Secretary of the union, Comrade Monday Jegede, at a press conference yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, said Moses was shot dead in front of his Agudama residence on Friday November 8. Jegede, who resides in Ado-Ekiti, where the secretariat of the union is situated, called on the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to order the immediate arrest of the Rector of the institution, Dr Eneyi Ekpebo over alleged complicity in the murder . The union also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the financial records of the institution. Jegede named four other people who should be questioned alongside the rector. They are: Tei Zion, Orubie Kuro, Nicko Ekemena and Ovie Olomu. The union’s secretary alleged that Moses was killed over his role in the unionization of the institution, which according to him the rector was not favourably disposed to.He further alleged that before the killing of the unionist, there was industrial crisis at the institution. Jegede listed the grievances of staff of the institution to include non- implementation of CONTIS 15, non-payment of minimum wage arrears and non-payment of four months salaries. Others, according to him include confirmation of appointment of staff who have served more than three years, non- implementation of NHIS and non-implementation of the Pension Act. “I am calling on the Inspector General of Police to intervene in this matter. Those who arrested the union leaders are first culprits as they were not representing SSANIP, but the personal interest of the rector. Those people are known, they should be arrested to get to the root of the assassination. When the strike action continued as a result of ineptitude of the rector, the congress of the union mandated its leaders to approach the court under the Freedom of Information Act to demand the release of some financial documents as regards some of their demands. But I was reliably informed that threat messages were issued by some management staff to the union leaders. On November 6, some members of the union’s executive were arrested and two days later, Comrade Moses was assassinated. The big question here is; who carried out the act,” he said.
