Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller denies Manchester United move was ever close Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has admitted that he knew of interest in his services from Manchester United during the summer, but has insisted that a move to Old Trafford was never really on the cards. The German World Cup winner cited his long- term Bayern contract as a reason behind the move never getting off the ground, saying that his deal at the club – in tandem with the German giants’ desire to keep him – made turning down interest from United an easy decision. Why Louis van Gaal may implement four at the back in the long term United were linked with a plethora of attacking players over the summer as they looked to rebuild their squad under Louis van Gaal, eventually signing Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo. However Muller denied that a move to Old Trafford was ever an option for him. “I know there was interest, but Man United were interested in a lot of players this summer,” he told reporters. “It never really got anywhere because I had just renewed my contract [until 2019], and Bayern were clear that they saw my future here. The decision for me was an easy one.” Muller also denied that Bayern’s early season form is related to the World Cup, stressing that the competition did not leave Bayern’s German contingent fatigued and that they are in good physical shape. “Everyone wants to link everything to the World Cup in the early weeks of the season,” he continued. “You play badly: you’ve fallen into a hole because of the World Cup. You play well: it’s the World Cup feel-good factor. “Physically, it shouldn’t be a problem at all, especially for us younger guys. Maybe in October, November, it’ll become difficult, mentally. But you can’t think that way when you play at Bayern. You mustn’t. “At Bayern, the journey is always headed for titles. So far, the travel agency haven’t called to say there’ll be complications. No rebooking, just yet.”
