Baytatul Hikmah: What Legacy will you leave Behind? (Notes) 23/12/14 • Allah subhana wa ta’ala says: I created you and you will return to the soil. • The example of the dunya is that it looks beautiful, smells and tastes wonderful but we should not be sucked into it as it is temporary. • Ghazzali: A vessel of 100 passengers are aboard and the captain sights an Island where he decides to land thinking they may be the first people to find this land. Their instruments tell him that there will be a tornado in three hours so they have limited time to view the island. He gets his people to separate into groups of two, one group are to explore the right side of the island while the other explore the left side of the Island. The group who explore the right side of the island find a beautiful smelling fruit that looks sweet, so they taste it and are overwhelmed with its sweetness. As they eat they keep in mind that they must return to the ship at the allotted time or they will miss the boat. They continue on exploring until they find a lake, they remove the heavy garments and begin to swim but with every stroke their mind reminds them of the allotted time to return to the ship. They begin to return to the ship when they see something in the distance but thought if we continue we will miss the boat as time does not allow us, so they return to the ship. The other group enjoy the fruit, as they taste its sweetness they slowly begin to forget that they must return. The group continues exploring and their minds completely forget the request of their captain to return at the allotted time. The captain decides that they will wait for this group for five minutes, but they do not return. So the captain and the group who remembered the time to return leave the island. The tornado comes and the people who were left behind are destroyed. • The example of Ghazzali is like when one group of people in the dunya explore and enjoy the dunya but always have in their mind the calling of Allah subhana wa ta’ala in their mind and return when called (examples of this: Time for salah, they leave the dunya to return to their Lord.) When one is occupied with the dunya and begin to slowly forget Allah subhana wa ta’ala they eventually will be destroyed for forgetting their Lord and His orders. • This dunya has been created for you, but you were created for worshipping Allah subhana wa ta’ala and the hereafter. • Never forsake ‘salam’, giving salam melts the hearts • Give salams to your spouses, as we are more harsh with them and softer with strangers or non mahram. Give salam and reply salams from people, whether you know them or not. • Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam knocked on a sahabah’s door once and gave salaam but there was no reply. So he knocked a second time giving salaam, but again there was no reply. Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam knocked a third time and gave salaam but again there was no reply. So he began to leave. When the sahabaha inside realized that he would not knock again, he opened the door and replied the salaams. Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam inquired was he inside when he knocked the 1st, 2nd and 3rd times? The Sahabah replied yes. Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam asked why did you not reply my salaam? The sahabah replied that every time you gave salaam you made dua for me and if I replied you would have stopped saying salaam. • A shop takes back items with or without a receipt to ‘protect’ the company name. To protect Islam, we must make sacrifices • A fraud was travelling on a ship where a great scholar was on board, he decided to sit with the scholar as he gave a talk. After the class the thief looked in the pocket of the scholar and saw a bag of gold coins, he thought about how he could steal this gold from the scholar. He went to the top level of the ship and screamed out that gold had been stolen from him, so the people on the boat began to search everyone for a bag of gold coins but no bag was found. The people on the boat began to refute the fraud saying he was a liar. He went to the scholar feeling remorse and apologized, he asked the scholar what had happened to the bag. The scholar replied that he had thrown it into the ocean, the thief inquired as to why he decided to do such a drastic thing. The scholar replied I am in the chain of narrations, if I was caught and labelled as a thief then the chain would be doubted. The scholar was Bukhari. • A scorpion fell into water and a man picked it up, the scorpion bit him and so he shook his hand and it fell into the water again. The man picked up the scorpion again and was bitten again as this is the nature of the scorpion. A person asked why he continued to touch the scorpion when he was going to be bitten again and again. The man replied that I sacrifice myself to help the scorpion. (Sacrifice not feeling pain to help an animal that was in danger of dying) • Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam’s speech was like honey and hearts we won over by his speech • Your tears and smile are rare qualities. Your tears should be for the sake of Allah subhana wa ta’ala, not for the loss of something haram (break up with boyfriend/girlfriend) Smile to your brothers and sisters and your spouses. When spouses smile to each other, Allah subhana wa ta’ala smiles at them both • Appreciate what your wife cooks for you. A husband came home and complimented the meal served to him. His wife began to cry and he asked her why she was crying, she replied to him I have prepared meals for you for 20 years and you never complimented them but the maid cooks this meal and you compliment the food. • Give gifts, food etc • Rights of people hold great importance, kindness to one another. • Hearts have to be united as muslims • Sacrifice is required as muslims we must sacrifice for the deen • If someone treats you ill, treat them well and their hearts may be softened • Turn to Allah subhana wa ta’ala before you return to him, when you return to him on the Day of Resurrection you will want to return to the Dunya to get closer to Him. • Dunya fools you, it is attractive but it is just an illusion. Jannah is more beautiful than the Dunya and we should be striving for Jannah not for the things in this Dunya. • Use things in the dunya to prepare your Jannah. (The ground for you salah, your car to drive toward the masjid to worship your Lord.) • Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam said: A smart person blames himself and pushes himself to be better and sacrifices for life after death. A limited person allows his nafs to win and control him, forgetting Allah subhana wa ta’ala. • Our goals should not be dunya based, but akhira based • We constantly hear bad advice, from movies to advice from family. That we should do this degree, do this to be famous, invest in this to gain more money etc. Investing in worldly fame is like investing in dirt. • Those who invest in akhira will be famous in the heavens. They are loved by Allah subhana wa ta’ala and granted a high place in Jannah • Our heart and actions expose us, we may say we don’t like celebrities or whatever dunya thing it may be, but when this celebrity comes and we get an autograph from them we are so happy, smiling, boasting and so on. • Fame in the dunya is like a star that rises and rises and then falls hard to the ground. You are popular when you’re young, in films and doing this and that but as you get older you are forgotten until you are alone on your death bed where your fame in the dunya has given you nothing for the next life. • Fame in Jannah is ever-lasting. • Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam said: When Allah subhana wa ta’ala loves his salve he calls Jibreel and says I love so and so, you also love so and so. So Jibereel goes to the angels, who there is no space for of a four finger span that prostrate to Allah subhana wa ta’ala and Jibereel informs these angels that Allah subhana wa ta’ala loves so and so, you also love this person! - The opposite happens when Allah subhana wa ta’ala dislikes a person • Bilal radillahu anhu: Was a black slave of the 3rd degree, the light of emaan came to his heart and he became the muezzin. He worked his rank from a slave of a man to the slave of Allah subhana wa ta’ala. Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salaam asked Bilal what is your strongest action, for I hear your footsteps in front of me in Jannah. Bilal radillahu anhu told the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam that when he has completed his wudu he performs 2 rakat’s of salah for the sake of Allah subhana wa ta’ala. • Sa’id ibn Mu’adh: He died after serving in the battle of the trench from wounds He was in islam for only 7 years before his death. The Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salaam said, The Throne (of Allah) shook at the death of Saad bin Muadh. (Sahih al Bukhari, 5:58:147) • Compare your efforts in the dunya to your efforts for the akhira, then fix yourself. • Our ranks are low in the sight of Allah subhana wa ta’ala and we can only raise them by doing ibadah, getting closer to Him and sacrificing for Islam. • Allah subhana wa ta’ala is pleased with the one who strives to him and they are pleased with Him (Allah). • Allah subhana wa ta’ala will not ask you what others did for Islam, but will ask what you did for Islam!
