Be Mindful of Neighbors in Periods of Extremely Cold Weather Extremely cold temperatures, such as those experienced during the recent “polar vortex” that resulted in bone-chilling temperatures and sub-zero wind chill levels, pose a very serious health threat to individuals without heated shelter. These types of extreme cold weather events can occur anytime throughout the winter months, putting individuals at risk for hypothermia which can result in death. As the winter progresses, please be mindful of friends, family, neighbors and other community members who may be without heat or appropriate shelter, and make an effort to check in on them regularly or help them get to a location where there is heat available. Likewise, if you find yourself without heat or safe shelter in extreme cold weather events, don’t be reluctant to reach out to others for assistance. For those who are without utilities or shelter and have nowhere else to go to escape the cold, the Union Rescue Mission and County United Way have established a cold weather shelter at 16 Queen City Pavement (sometimes referred to as “Front Street”). No one is turned away from the shelter, and at the present time beds are still available for those in need. The Union Rescue Mission can be reached by calling 301-724-1585. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness, and loss of motor coordination. In infants, symptoms can also include bright red, cold skin and very low energy. If you notice signs of hypothermia get the victim to a warm, dry location as quickly as possible. Seek medical attention immediately if the person’s temperature drops below 95°F or if he/she is unconscious or does not seem to have a pulse or to be breathing. By keeping others in mind that may be at risk in extreme cold and taking the time to look in on vulnerable community members, we can all play a role in keeping our residents safe and warm. Dr. Sue V.
