Be Not Fooled By Beauty (Pro 6:25, Pro 31:30) Mynie did not even bother to apply for her high school’s annual beauty pageant. She knows Corrine will win any way. Corrine has walked away with every reward available since her standard six year. Why would it be any different this year? Besides, she doesn’t have a dress to wear. Her father was only the local struggling painter, so he could never afford the kind of dress the girls wear to the pageant! Today Mynie had a mountain of homework to do; therefore she skipped the hockey practice. The doorbell rang once, twice, three times so Mynie got up thinking that her father might be painting in his back yard studio and may not hear the doorbell. He opened the door to one of the ladies at church. “Good afternoon Sr. Jonston. I think Daddy is I his studio. Please have a seat and I will tell him you are here.” “Thank you, Mynie”, Mrs. Jonston said: “But I would like to speak to both you and your Dad.” Mynie wondered what Mrs. Jonston had to say to Daddy. Did she do something wrong?” When Daddy came in he and Mynie sat down opposite Mrs. Jonston. “Mynie you should not let the fact that you don’t have a dress for the pageant worry you. You could do my friend’s daughter a huge favour by modeling one of her dresses. She has just qualified as a designer and need this kind of exposure. Would you consider it for her sake?” Mynie discussed it with her father, who thought that it was a great idea to support the Mrs. Jonston’s friend. “Even if you do not win, it will also help you gain confidence in appearing before large groups of people.” Daddy said. The day of the pageant came round and Mynie had butterflies in her tummy. She had a mind to fake illness and pull out. But then she reminded herself of Mrs. Jonston’s friend and her daughter. And then she thought of all the preparations they have done, the modeling lessons, the training in public speaking her dad‘s chairman - friend gave her and she realized she could not possibly disappoint them now! The school hall was noisy cacophony of humanity. Moms encouraged each other on their respective daughter’s prospects. Dads each boasted about their own daughter’s exquisite beauty and other exceptional qualities. Siblings were squabbling about who will carry their sister’s trophies when they were crowned. Mynie’s stomach was in a knot of anxiety. What if she made a colossal mess of it all? She did look like a complete stranger to herself in the mirror. Could this vision of loveliness really be her? The proceedings passed as if in a total blur. She paraded the dress just the way she was taught. She gave her speech exactly as she was so carefully coached. And now she was standing on the stage as one of the favorite four contestants. Just to get this far was unreal to her. How did she, mousy Mynie, get here? Somewhere, during the proceedings, it struck Mynie that Corrine was not among the contestants! Where could she be? One by one the names of the runners up were called until Mynie was standing as one of the last two girls. She was shaking! “The winner is…” She was sure she was going to faint! “Mynie Strauss!” No way! The principal came toward Mynie with the glittering tiara in his hand. “And”, said the principal “to crown this year Queen Of The Roses”, from the side of the stage came a smiling Corrine, exquisite in white, to take the tiara from the principal and place the magnificent piece on Mynie’s head. “Our head prefect Corrine Dalton.” Disbelievingly Mynie’s hand reached up to touch the jewelry, the symbol of victory, adorning her hair. It’s incredible, but true! In the changing room Corrine came to see her. “Mynie you look gorgeous! I am so glad you did it, you won!” She said. This dress is magnificent! The designer must be thrilled with all the publicity it’s getting! It was very sweet and noble of you to overcome your shyness and help this designer display her handy work!” “But why didn’t you compete?” Mynie asked, “Surely you would have won!” “Mynie,” Said Corrine “beauty is a very temporary thing. Not all that glitters is gold, you know? It’s more important to have a beautiful Godly nature than a temporarily lovely face!”
