Be Prepared! A severe weather warning has been issued for the Midlands, Wales and the South. The latest update is that structural damage is highly likely, as winds of 60-80mph cross the UK late Sunday night and through Monday. Flooding is also anticipated with 20 to 40 mm rain expected within a short space of time. Winds in coastal areas could be in excess of 80mph. All outside animals could be in danger, and particularly those caged. Check their accommodation carefully well before the storm arrives. Consider relocating or bringing into the house/secure garage. if this is not possible, secure the accommodation down with rope, weights etc as necessary. Relocate accommodation to sheltered areas - but away from possible debris hazards (branches etc), turn hutches away from the wind when it arrives to offer more shelter for your little ones, and remove or secure down anything that could become flying debris - garden pots, log piles, gardening equipment, watering cans, bins, buckets etc. Also remember this will be a very stressful time for the animals - be extra vigilant for health issues, and seek veterinary advice as soon as possible if any problem suspected. Have carriers ready in case you need to relocate pets quickly. Get the latest update directly from the Met Office for your area from here: metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1382918400®ionName=uk As soon as the storm has passed, thoroughly check outside accommodation for any structural damage - repair damage right away to ensure it remains predator-proof. Continue to keep an eye on your little ones after the storm too - stress can trigger issues that show in the days to come. Obviously we will not know the severity or impact of this storm until it hits, but it is wise to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Being over-cautious is better than being under-prepared!
