Be forewarned, this is a minor rant: I’ve been going through the training modules today that I’m supposed to deliver next week on Community Outreach, Marketing and Social Media Marketing to a participant from a foreign Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Regulatory Agency. I’m struck, yet again, by how disappointed I am by poorly designed training courses. It is clear to me that each of the 5 modules was designed and/or written by 5 separate people who had no communication with each other because of the overlap in content, the differences in formatting and in focus or slant. The first one was clearly designed with health care as the focus. The second one focuses on Urban Planning and the third one focuses on doing Community Outreach in conjunction with local Police Departments. The fourth one is only 11 slides long and says nothing that hasn’t been covered in the previous modules. And the fifth module on Social Media Marketing was clearly written 3 or 4 years ago. Social Media are fluid in their designs – think about all the iterations of how Facebook looks. And, the comparison chart of various Social Media sites is woefully out of date. The module also was clearly designed by a young person who has no business experience because it has only ONE slide on LinkedIn. The kicker to the whole thing is that the man to whom I’m subcontracted has decided he doesn’t trust the trainers not to “steal” the materials, so he dumps the PowerPoint slides into password-protected pdf files that can’t be printed. Therefore, I can’t print out the slides to make notes to myself about definitions, talking points, facts, or stories I want to talk about on a given slide. The person who will suffer is the participant. One of my friends says I should just ignore my high standards and expectations and my desire to give the participant the best info possible, which is what she said she does when she delivers training for this guy.
