Be silent before the Sovereign LORD, for the day of the LORD is near. The LORD has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited. Zephaniah 1:7 (NIV) The Israelites of this day had already seen a great slaughter during their life time when the Babylonians invaded their land. Now the prophet is prophesying these as future events. However, the prophet did not know the exact time when these events would occur. Quite often prophecies in the Old Testament have double fulfillment – one for the near future and one in the distant future, quite possibly during the end of times. Zephaniah is giving a prophecy filled with terror. He is trying to have the Israelites repent and turn back to the Lord. He emphatically prophesied that the Lord would carry out vengeance on them because of their failure to maintain the Lord God as their one and only God. As we look at people today in our country we fail to see them serving the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Like the Israelites many people have created their own gods and have put Christ on the back burner. They say they are Christians, but the live lives which do anything but glorify Him. As God brought judgment down on Israel He will bring judgment down on the United States and all those who fail to serve Him.
