Be silly this festive season but don’t be reckless The festive season brings the celebration of religious holidays, festivities, sporting events and concerts. This results in a significant increase in vehicles travelling on the national and provincial road network across Gauteng. Therefore it is a critical period for all road traffic law enforcement agencies. The Tshwane Emergency Services Specialised Task Force has started to set up various checkpoints (popularly known as roadblocks) along roads throughout Tshwane in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies. The checkpoints are aimed at ensuring that all dangerous goods passing through Tshwane have been authorised by means of legal documents that accompany them. The joint operations began in September and will continue during the festive season to complement other road safety actions. The checkpoints alert companies involved in the transportation of dangerous goods to comply with all the legal requirements and standards concerned. Other units of Tshwane Emergency Services that form part of the operations are Fire Brigade Services, Emergency Medical Services, Disaster Management and Fire Safety. Notices and sometimes fines are issued to drivers and vehicles that do not comply with the set rules and legislation. The Specialised Task Force will check if the following are in place for a load to be transported: Fire extinguishers that are in good working order, correct labelling of the transported goods in line with legal prescriptions, exhaust outlets on tankers that transport dangerous goods, valid dangerous goods and driver’s licences, an orange box that contains the required documents, and the correct battery isolator and holder. Other safety issues such as roadworthiness and authenticity of licences will be checked by other disciplines. All hazardous goods accidents or fire incidents must be reported immediately. Road users must avoid stopping at such accident scenes, as they might inhale toxic fumes or sustain severe injuries. The visibility of Tshwane Emergency Services at checkpoints will help to send out the message that our roads are safe to travel on at all times. Our teams of traffic officials and road safety officers remain committed to the call of duty and we request communities to work together with them and respect the rules of the road.
