Be vigilant - Don’t Become a Statistic! It is an unfortunate fact that we live in a crime ridden country and we have all experienced, or know someone who has experienced some sort of crime. Although we cannot do much about the crime rates and the way it affects us, we can be vigilant and try to not become one of these statistics. If you are leaving on holiday soon, don’t advertise your empty house as a welcome target for thieves! Instead, take steps to enhance safety and security. Before leaving home, take note of the following security tips: • Use lighting liberally on the exterior and interior of your house. Purchase several light timers, and program lights for different rooms at varying times. • Prune shrubs away from windows and doors and remove any tree limbs that might inadvertently provide access to a second-story. • Never hide keys in the mailbox, planter or under a mat. • Ensure that all door and window locks are operable. • Fit all entry doors – back door, garage door and patio door – with extra security dead bolts, preferably all steel and brass construction with a cylinder guard. • For doors with glass panels within three feet of the lock, use a double-cylinder deadbolt. These require key operation from both sides. • If absent for more than two weeks, arrange for someone to maintain your yard. • Consider asking a neighbor or friend to park their car in your driveway. • Before leaving, double check that all doors and windows are locked, and light timers are set. • Provide relatives or friends with contact information in case of emergency. And because of probable load-shedding . . . . . ➢ Ensure your back-up batteries are topped up and are in good condition on perimeter gates, garage doors and whatever other equipment works in this manner. One does not need to be locked outside your own home because of no power.
