Be yourself? Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston shared many tales in common apart from being dead music idols- they are widely adored, weirdly criticized and wildly awarded. But beyond their glories, are their tragedies! Both when taken together reflect the danger of trying to be someone else. The quest to be perfectly White, surrendering that perfect Black body to be altered by some plastic digital manipulation made Michael Jackson so imperfect... that is human piracy! And Whitney, in the quest to fit into the industry turned her back against the true Christian values that raised her. So she migrated from Christ to circular, Circular to crack, and from crack to cocaine then to psychotic ward, exiled from the realities of life..! But as I reflect on these two characters, I realize we are not unlike them. We are all guilty of not being ourselves! First, we arrive earth with our original settings and most at times change our default settings if they are not in sync with our society. We copy from books we read, learn from people we socialize with, and often speak and act like them. We drop some original bad temperaments and get polished...we all strive to fit in. We could after all be wrong; there is nothing like: ‘BE YOURSELF’. We are either pirated, or innovated. Which one are you..? Happy weekend!
