#BeHappy Tip #5: Choose to Not Be Offended When one is offended, they are usually upset, annoyed, or resentful. Most often they feel disrespected or insulted. Whether offensive statements or material were deliberate or not, you certainly have full control of how you allow them to affect you. When the insult is intentional, it is difficult to not be offended. Although it may be an automatic response or a defense mechanism, through recognition and practice you can self-master this skill to where not taking offense becomes habitual. This principle is not exclusively applied to interpersonal relationships; it can apply to societal matters as well. Could we as a society stop insisting on banning "offensive" material and rather focus on fixing the flaws within ourselves which have caused us to take offense? We are human beings created to #act; not to be acted upon. To take offense is choosing to be acted upon. We have been given free agency and therefore we always have the right to choose how we will react in an offensive or hurtful situation. "To be offended is a choice we make; it is not a condition inflicted or imposed upon us by someone or something else." - Elder David A.
