Bear activity last night has been reported in at least 2 areas. Late in the night at 1am, on the West side of Gunnison Ave. The bear easily got his paw under a plywood door, split it in half and went for the trash can, leaving the freezer full of food untouched. Nearby neighbor Clay Cotton woke to the sound, turned on a light but did not deter the bear. In the Ball Flats area 719 Pine Street a bear broke into a bear barrel secured by an old lever action rim lid at 4am, awaking nearby resident Rene Fairies who scared him off. From the descriptions we believe this to be the same bear. He is a large older black colored boar probably 4 to 6 yrs in age. He is clever and wary of people. He makes the same rounds during the very late night, and has been doing this for years (according to some residents. We are going to deploy our shock mat in front of the shed at the Gunnison Ave residence, and discuss options for securely storing trash.
