Beason, Slaton, and Gerrior Claim First Wins as Nail, Cody, and Flud Continue Hot Streaks! Story by Brian Walker – Walker Racing Promotions (BGH Photos) Tulsa, OK | June 1, 2014 – It was one crazy night of action packed micro racing last night as Port City Raceway hosted their 15th event of the slated 38 race schedule in 2014. The Tulsa, Oklahoma track would see three first time winners in 2014 while three more drivers continued on with their already impressive seasons. The always intense and wild 1/8th mile saw some tough wrecks, side by side racing, and heartbreak for many drivers. Through the completed 15 races this season Port City has seen a total of 35 different drivers earn a victory, providing quite the variety for fans and racers alike. Not only has the tack impressed with winners, but car counts as well. PCR currently averages 133.5 entries on a weekly basis after reeling in a total of 148 entries last evening. Port City will once again be in action this Saturday night as the ninth point race of the season will commence. Practice will be held this Tuesday night from 6 – 9 P.M. and is open to all divisions. In two weeks on June 14th, the track will hold the annual Pink-Out Port City Raceway event to raise awareness for cancer. A full breakdown of last night’s action can be found below along with results. A full statistical report of the 2014 season at Port City Raceway will also be released in the next week. JR. SPRINTS! The Jr. Sprint division would see a total of 17 cars last evening as three heat races followed by a 20-lap feature would be run. Emilio Hoover, Hank Davis, and J Brady Hilton claimed the three heat race victories as no B-Main would be needed. Two Broken Arrow natives of Hoover and Preston Scheulen would pace the feature field to green. Hoover would guide her #9 machine right into the lead as the green flag dropped, but tragedy would soon strike. As the young driver had started to check out on the field, a huge pileup in turn four would ensue as the wreckage claimed the race leader and almost a total of five cars. After the carnage was all over with it was Scheulen who came out with the race lead. J Brady Hilton in his #46 machine would instantly begin hounding Scheulen for the lead lap after lap on the restart. As the Tulsa resident was working like crazy to take the race lead, one little mishap allowed both Jake Nail and Hank Davis to slip by and move onto the podium. The laps started to tick off and in the final five laps a battle would emerge for the lead. Driving his Sawyer Chassis #14R machine, Jake Nail would storm into the race lead with a mere two laps remaining and walk away to claim his division high sixth win of the season! Hank Davis would make a last lap pass to dive into second, Preston Scheulen earned an impressive third, Baron Silva claimed fourth, and Kale Drake closed out the top five. A-Main (20 laps): 1. Jake Nail (9), 2. Hank Davis (12), 3. Preston Scheulen (2), 4. Baron Silva (7), 5. Kale Drake (5), 6. Holly Hollan (10), 7. Grady Mercer (17), 8. Shawn Mahaffey (11), 9. J Brady Hilton (6), 10. Connor Lee (16), 11. Grayson Gaddy (13), 12. Johnny Bettes (14), 13. Elizabeth Phillips (3), 14. Rees Moran (15), 15. Gunner Bowden (8), 16. Emilio Hoover (1), 17. Joey Gray (4). Lap Leader(s): Emilio Hoover 1-6; Preston Scheulen 7-18; Jake Nail 19-20. Hard Charger(s): Hank Davis, Grady Mercer +10 A-CLASS! The always unpredictable and wild division of A-Class would reel in the highest car count of the night while pulling in 31 cars. The four heat races would be won by Nathan Weida, Frank Flud, Jonathan Beason, and Joey Baker as Ryan Gauntt and Wes Little claimed B-Main action. As the 16-car feature field was set it was Beason and Tulsa native Bailey Hughes on the front row. The 2014 Chili Bowl Nationals Tuesday night prelim feature winner of Beason would rocket his #36 QuikTrip sponsored machine straight into the lead. As Beason would immediately start to check out the action could be seen right behind him as Weida and Hughes fought for second. Just a mere ten laps into the feature and Beason was fighting through lap traffic as Chris Andrews climbed into third from eight. A few yellows would bunch the field up and as the halfway point was reached Andrews would pass Hughes for second place. As Beason once again started to catch traffic Andrews in his #77 Tulsa Sod & Mulch machine was quickly chopping away at the gap lap by lap. One final red flag would kill all of his Andrews’ progress and allow Beason to run in clean air. The restart would prove to be useless as Jonathan Beason would go on to lead all 25 laps and claim his first victory of 2014 at Port City Raceway! Chris Andrews would settle for second place, Frank Flud charged from ninth to finish third, Bailey Hughes held on the claim fourth, and Wes Little stormed from 14th to round out the top five. A-Main: (25 laps): 1. Jonathan Beason (1), 2. Chris Andrews (8), 3. Frank Flud (9), 4. Bailey Hughes (2), 5. Wes Little (14), 6. Jordan Herrman (11), 7. Kris Carroll (12), 8. Devin Gerrior (15), 9. Lap Leader(s): Jonathan Beason 1-25 Hard Charger(s): Wes Little +9 RESTRICTED! A 22-car field would come out to make up the Restricted division as three heat races and a B-Main would ensue. Heat race action would see Cole Roberts, Jase Randolph, and Alison Slaton grab victories as Zac Moody won the B-Main. Come feature time it would be Sawyer Guidry in his #92 machine alongside Edmond native Alison Slaton on the front row. It was neither pole sitter that grabbed the early lead as Cole Roberts took to the point immediately in his #3 machine. A pack of yellows would kill the pace early on in the race as Roberts could never fully walk away from the field. Roberts finally started to check out at the halfway point just as Blake Battles came storming into the top five. The battle for the lead would heat up as Battles climbed into second and was closing on Roberts in the final laps. While using the high side to his advantage Battles would rocket by Roberts with a mere four laps remaining, but on the same lap chaos would break loose. Coming out of turn four Roberts would catch an infield tire as the two would make contact and send the two leaders around. The incident would end two great runs, but allow for a new and incredible story to emerge. Alison Slaton would inherit the race lead and easily hold on to claim her first victory of 2014, just one year after the tragic passing of her mother. It was an emotional win as Slaton took her Slaton Racing #2 machine to victory lane. Kelsey Gray would earn her season best finish of second, Tristan Oakes claimed third, Trenton Jackson grabbed fourth, and Haley Hollan charged from 16th to 5th. A-Main (25 laps): 1. Jaiden Hughes (14) Lap Leader(s): Cole Roberts 1-20; Blake Battles 21; Alison Slaton 22-25. Hard Charger(s): Haley Hollan +11 NON-WING! Twenty-nine Non-Wing cars would make up the wingless division at Port City as another four heat races followed by a B-Main would be run. Austin Shores, Curtis Jones, Rayce Bowen, and Dylan Ward won the heat races as Jordan Herrman earned the B-Main victory. Brittany Yarwood in her #13B machine and Austin Shores would lead the field to green. Yarwood would jump out to the early lead in her Royal Purple machine, but the lead would be short-lived as Devin Gerrior came rocketing by on lap five. Immediately as Gerrior took the lead he would check out on the field and set his sights on victory. The action could be seen in the middle of the field as it was Jason McDougal, Grady Chandler, and Harlan Hulsey who were all charging to the front. As the five to go signal was shown the charging trio of McDougal, Chandler, and Hulsey were running second, third, and fourth while running down Gerrior. Chaos would ensue shortly as McDougal suffered motor trouble and would collect Chandler as he tried to pull in. The heartbreaking accident would allow for a final showdown between Gerrior and Hulsey. The Owasso native would fend off all challenges from the competition as Devin Gerrior claimed his first victory of the year at Port City! Harlan Hulsey came home with a close second, Curtis Jones grabbed third, Jonathan Beason came from 11th to fourth, and Brittany Yarwood dropped back to fifth. A-Main (25 laps): 1. Devin Gerrior (4), 2. Harlan Hulsey (14), 3. Curtis Jones (6), 4. Jonathan Beason (11), 5. Brittany Yarwood (1), 6. Dylan Ward (7), 7. Thad Bennett (16), 8. Jarrett Crouch (10), 9. Lap Leader(s): Brittany Yarwood 1-5; Devin Gerrior 6-25. Hard Charger(s): Harlan Hulsey +12 SPORTSMAN! A 24-car field is what the Sportsman division would see last night as three more heat races and a B-Main would commence. Robert McIntosh, Kenny Howard, and Royce Rusher claimed heat race action as Charles Corte grabbed the B-Main win. As the feature field rolled out it was Howard and Tulsa native Raymond Hill on the front row. Howard immediately took his Farmers Insurance #69 machine into the lead and took command of the field. The Owasso native was stretching out his lead lap after lap and continually walking away from the field, but that was all about to change. An already two-time feature winner in 2014 of Ryan Cody was working his way into second from 5th and setting his sights on Howard. As the cross flags flew at the halfway mark Cody finally made his move and piloted his #7 RC Motorsports car into the lead. As Cody started to leave the field in his dust during the final laps, Brandon Henson would sneak past Howard as he climbed into second. The #7 machine would receive no challenges in the second half of the 25-lap feature as Ryan Cody dominated in his third victory of the season. Brandon Henson charged from 10th to second, Cody Cole claimed third, Kenny Howard grabbed fourth, and Isaac Barr rounded out the top five. A-Main (25 laps): 1. Ryan Cody (5), 2. Brandon Henson (10), 3. Cody Cole (7), 4. Kenny Howard (1), 5. Isaac Barr (12), 6. Jeremy Wickham (8), 7. Mark Lutz (6), 8. Luke Tipton (15), 9. Dwight Green (11), 10. Chris Doss (14), 11. Hard Charger(s): Brandon Henson +8 OUTLAW! Last, but not least is the always entertaining Outlaw division that would see 25 cars battle it out. Heat race action would see Matt Taylor, Frank Flud, and Chris Andrews grab victory as Layne Himebaugh stormed to the B-Main win. The front row of the feature would see Taylor, a Coweta native alongside the #21X of Tommy Calico. Taylor immediately shot to the early race lead in his #79 machine, but was unaware of the charge of drivers he had coming his way. Frank Flud used a combination of both luck and skill as he guided his #81 Sawyer Chassis machine into the top five from 12th in only a mere five laps. The Pryor native would then use a yellow to his advantage as he rocketed from 5th to claim the race lead on lap eight during the restart. A few more cautions are what allowed the #8 Sawyer Chassis of Chris Andrews to drive from 11th and into second behind Flud. Charging along with Andrews was the CTE Racing #9 of B-Main winner, Layne Himebaugh. One final restart would give Andrews a shot at Flud, but order would remain the same with Flud in front. As the checkered flag would fly it was Frank Flud who crossed the line first as he claimed his 11th victory of the season at Port City! Chris Andrews capped off his charge from 11th with a second place, Layne Himebaugh ended his charge from 13th with a 3rd, Matt Taylor grabbed fourth, and Kenny Koelsch claimed fifth.
