Beating and killing black men and boys in America is not new. After Rodney King was beaten I saw an image of police marching in a parade, swinging their batons, dressed in battle gear. This was 1991 or 1992. I was working on the 13 X 17 Stained Glass Window Wall of oil paintings. I painted the top right image (excuse poor quality) in the form of a rose window. It features one battle decked police officer marching in defense of police in a NYC parade, in each quarter of the window. The one at 6 oclock heading to 9 oclock is easiest to make out. The whole series of artwork, like most all of mine, is an exploration of the powerful and the powerless. I was furious that those helmeted police were parading around like saviors while black men lay wounded and dying in their very own city, as well as Rodney King in LA. This was part of my Masters Thesis show.
