Because Doing Nothing Is Not A Viable Option: TNR Solutions I - TopicsExpress

Because Doing Nothing Is Not A Viable Option: TNR Solutions I would like to throw out a proposal / idea / concept to those on both sides of the TNR issue. And before you roll your eyes please hear me out. We know that TNR will probably remain in place for the foreseeable future. So how can we make life better for the feral, reduce their desire to hunt, increase the chance of providing and tracking their vaccinations and get better data flowing upstream? It seems to me that if we create Colony Captains who shepherd a colony for what they need, such as food, medical care/vaccinations and take over management of the colony. This might go a long way to help ease the issues the anti-TNR people have and create a network of colony managers made up of the cat lovers in the community. The Captains would have to be given a waiver of liability by the city and County otherwise they wont participate - and I hope that is possible. I know there are people like this already all over the county - but I think we need to take it one step further and formalize their jobs and make a network of Captains in the County. I would propose a public-private partnership of the County and companies like Nestle or Purina or even get grant funds from any number of sources and PAY the Colony Captains a little monthly stipend for managing them and making monthly reports with pictures and data for upstream tracking and management. And provide food options so that we can reduce their desire to hunt and make them easier to trap when needed. I think this type of small step might help create an opening for the TNR supporters and the TNR detractors to find a way to reach a middle ground about something. The goal is to allow them to live reasonable health lives and ultimately self-liquidate the colony over time. This might be a good start toward a solution. I welcome constructive comments and even constructive criticisms. I will delete your post if you become harsh, or make anything here personal - we ARE here for the animals, right?
