Because I am eternally predictable, I shall quickly offer this (comparatively preliminary; Ive started the game but am far from finishing it) opinion on Pokemon X and Y, as I did on Pokemon Black and White: its what Pokemon should have been from the beginning, but wasnt, and Im still not COMPLETELY sure thats a good thing. Be careful what you wish for; you might get it. This game is on the 3DS because the hardware is finally able to basically turn every fight into Pokemon Stadium, not because it actually needs to be in 3D. In fact, only fights are in 3D at all, as well as certain select cutscenes; the 3D feature will automatically shut itself off at all other times. Which is a mercy, considering the 3DSs pathetic battery life; I should have system transferred into a 3DS XL at least a year ago, and Im honestly considering it now. So yes, unlike Pokemon Black and White, Pokemon X and Y (or variable and other variable, as I like to call it) is in fully 3D graphics all the time, though the 3D feature of the 3DS only turns on for the combat. Its all at least as good as the Gamecubes graphics, so its perfectly fine as far as Nintendos ever cared; not only has Nintendo never been on the cutting edge of graphics, but the Pokemon franchise has always been deliberately a step behind the cutting edge. Technical matters aside, I will say this: X and Y are what Pokemon should have been from the beginning. XP grinding is gone, because you get the EXP Share after the first gym, and all it does is sit in your key items pocket and apply to ALL of your team until you turn it off, making it what the EXP All was supposed to be in Gen 1. You also get XP for captures now, not just defeating enemies, so every fight you dont run from gets you something. Gets your entire team something, because remember: new EXP share functionality. You can train everybody entirely off of fighting trainers and capturing new Pokemon you come across, running from everything else. Effort value grinding has been supplanted by Super Training, a way to target a specific stat and grind it up to the exclusion of all else. Gone are the days of typical EV grinding; just play this minigame over and over and youll get your stats right where you want them. Friendship grinding is still in the game every bit as much as it was before, and its just as frustrating as it used to be, even with a new source of friendship in the Pokemon-Amie minigames. It takes time and energy to run Pokemon Amie, and it takes LOTS of both to make it actually count for something. Unless you have something to accomplish by doing so, the old methods of friendship grinding are the best ones, so stick to them. Pokemon-Amie should be used as needed (i.e. to get a Sylveon, if you REALLY want one), and then as desired (i.e. never).
