Because I dont get into nearly enough fights on Facebook (!) Im going to say it... I dont actually think Michael Gove was a bad Education Secretary. Teachers provide a vital service to society but they must be answerable for their performance to the electorate via the government and the Secretary of State. It is clearly then the responsibility of the Secretary of State to demand a higher standard of results if he feels that it is possible. Currently 50% of pupils leave school with fewer than 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Are we really saying thats the best that we can hope for? You can say what you like about Gove and his methods, but he was clearly committed to raising standards in schools for all (see here for an example of his philosophy in this regard: blogs.spectator.co.uk/coffeehouse/2013/02/michael-gove-my-debt-to-jade-goody-and-the-future-of-school-reform/). Now I dont want to get into finger-pointing and blaming anyone for anything but I believe that the elected government needs to act as the peoples representative to the public servants in order to maximise the use of taxpayers money. Ok, dare I say discuss...?
