Because I want to understand what on earth happened to me in the convent a decade ago, and why the other sisters experienced it as well. The shattering and the sparks happened twice at the tabernacle. It was something completely inexplicable to any of us, but meaningful in reference to Kabbalah, which would have been farthest from our minds as conservative Catholics. Still, it manifested itself and there was no denying what had happened. I believe that Kabbalah transcends religion, because the spiritual reality is simply greater than any school of spirituality (aka religion). Dr. Andrew Newberg conducts replicable lab experiments to investigate the physiological manifestations of purported spiritual experiences. I appreciate his openness to the possibility - that even though there is physiological evidence (visible changes in brain scans) - that the subjective experience of a trance state (supposedly prophetic) may actually be the physical dimension of a truly spiritual experience. To err on the side of caution doesnt mean to rule out the possibility of a truly spiritual experience, but to remain critical but open (skeptical) to the possibility that spiritual phenomena do objectively exist.
