Because it is highly debatable as to if these individuals are asylum seekers or illegal immigrants, Im just going to use the word people, because irrespective of their background they are that much, the latter is just political football which I suspect is just presumptuous in a majority of cases. You know apart from the fact I just dont feel comfortable trusting this government with anything, I really dont know where to sit with the immigration/asylum seeker argument. It is and always was a complicated issue. We have allegations here that, according to a relative of 11 of the 150-odd people who were handed back to the Sri Lankan navy had been tortured by their government. They had all been in a refugee camp in india but chose to take a boat to Australia. According to the Sri Lankan government, conditions have improved and people are voluntarily returning, apparently there is no reason to now leave apart from economic reasons. A complicated jumble of opportunism, fear, uncertainty and deceit. Do we all need to do time working in this sector somewhere to have a truly informed opinion? Dunno, but I cant help but feel there are a lot of people being very opinionated on the topic based on not much knowledge or experience. If I have it wrong, maybe we need to share what they know more openly for the better instead of in reactive instances where the dialogue just becomes personal and unproductive.
