Because of the shootings, I think people are forgetting their Social Justice 101. Im seeing a lot of white people intellectually debating amongst themselves about whether Charlie Hebdo was racist (and not asking the people portrayed if they find it hurtful or offensive). Im seeing a lot of them excuse CH because it makes fun of everything. Im seeing a lot of them say you just dont get the joke. Im seeing a lot of you dont understand French humor. These are POINT-BY-POINT the problematic rationalizations we hear (and work so hard against) when we discuss hurtful satire that routinely punches down. Basically verbatim. I know that paradox is an uncomfortable place to be--especially for people of a dominant culture. But it is absolutely possible to be staunchly in favor of a persons ability to say whatever they want without fearing being murdered, while simultaneously criticizing what they are saying.
