Beccles II - 37 Dereham - 7 Beccles’ second string put in a solid performance to get a much needed win over third placed Dereham at Beef Meadow. Beccles started the game strongly, with both Harrison and Driver making the most of the space out wide and having some solid runs. Early pressure in the Dereham twenty two allowed Wade to put the first points on the board. Beccles continued to probe and make good ground, this, and a combination of poor Dereham discipline let Wade convert a further two penalties to make the score 9-0 after twenty minutes. Beccles again found themselves deep in the Dereham twenty two. A rumbling Beccles scrum allowed Goode to dribble the ball at the base, with this Hazzard picked the ball up and dived over the line for the first try of the game. Soon after, Edwards replaced Goode, who sustained an ankle injury and looks to be out for the rest of the season. Beccles finished the half strongly, Harmer worked the ball wide to Harrison who showed impressive pace to run in for a try having started in his own half. HT 23-0. The home side continued to play attacking rugby in order to entertain the large home crowd. The Beccles wingers, Bloomfield and Callaway both had chances to score early on, only to be tackled just short of the try-line. Lee Moon rolled back the years with a charging run out wide allowing Beccles to get good territory in the Dereham half. From the back of another solid Beccles scrum the ball was fed wide to B&B Skip Hire Man of the Match Tom Harrison, who ran through a gap in the defence and finished well under the posts. Dereham started to challenge the Beccles defence for the first time in the game however, their effort was matched and some by some crunching tackles from both Edwards and Velardo. Rouse was rewarded for his hard work throughout the game when the tall second rower crashed over under the posts from close range to put the game beyond doubt. Port and Morton gave selectors some food for thought ahead of next week’s first team fixture, both displaying good defence and attack throughout the game. A depleted Dereham side competed hard until the very end and were rewarded when they scored a try in the corner in the last play. Beccles will be happy with a comprehensive victory in which they achieved what they set to before the game. Next week the first team are back in action when they host league leaders Campion while the second team host Norwich, 3PM KO.
