Becoming a superstar is all about what you do— the ways that you act on your world. It doesn’t matter how you look or even where you went to school. What counts is taking positive constructive actions. Here are 10 ways to become a recognized achiever and leader in your field of work based on my research on how over 100 Indian and Western people achieved extraordinary success. 1. Know your mini-strengths and find ways to capitalize on them. Mini-strengths are the little things that you do really well. They can be as simple as being able to easily emotionally connect with others, find information on the web that others miss or solve technical problems that leave others mystified. 2. Forget about the things that you do badly. No matter how hard you work at them you will never be better than average. Get someone else to do them. When Anu Aga became director of Thermax India Ltd., a Mumbai-based global energy company, after her husband’s death, she knew that she lacked the analytical mini-strengths in the technical and financial areas that were needed to identify the company’s problems. So she hired a consulting group to do this for her. 3. Pursue work you passionately care about that energizes you. Without inner passion for what you are doing, you won’t be able to sustain the enormous effort needed to become a recognized achiever and leader. In his sixties, Dr. Venkataswamy built Aravind Eye Care System, a Tamil Nadu based chain of eye hospitals, from a small 12-bed eye hospital into a large world-class institution out of his passion for bringing eyesight to poor people in rural India who suffer from cataracts. 4. Select flexible goals. In today’s uncertain world it is hard to know what will happen as you pursue your goals. People who succeed are continually adjusting their goals based on the roadblocks they encounter and the unexpected opportunities that occur. Steve Jobs founded Apple to make personal computers. As technology advanced, he saw the opportunity to move into developing innovative music players, phones and tablets and immediately expanded his goals. 5. Learn to listen. Listening is more than having your mobile phone glued to your ear while you walk down the street or read your email. It is fully focusing on what someone is saying. Listening opens your eyes to perspectives and ideas you didn’t know existed and creates valuable workplace connections by showing others that you respect them.Make yourself visible to the people who have the power to help you succeed. Just doing a great job is not enough. People need to recognize you as an achiever. Step forward and do presentations at work and volunteer for projects and events where your contributions will be noticed. 6. As Sam Walton, founder of U.S.-based global retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc., stated, “One person seeking glory doesn’t accomplish much.” Learn how to ask for help and be on the lookout for ways you can help others, including your boss who depends on you for his or her success. 8. Know how to manage your emotions. To perform at your best in key situations, you need to be calm and focused. Anger and anxiety robs you of this ability. Yuvraj Singh, the cricketer, notes that to succeed you must rule your emotions rather than letting them rule you. 9. See failure as feedback. No one makes the journey to success without failing at some points. Failure is how you grow and learn. Consider your failures as life’s free education. 10. Know how to have fun. From age 25 to 65 you will spend approximately 80,000 hours working. This is a long time to spend doing things you don’t enjoy. Moreover, people who find their work fun are more likely to succeed. #We_Mathematicians
