Bed sores-in a hospital-a sign of poor nursing care, shortage of nurses, or lack of skilled nurses I was saddened to see this cancer patient and hear from her husband that she had bed sores--she was unconscious for over two months. And he had paid a sum of thirty lakhs to the hospital which includes nursing care!! I remember in my hospital days, a patient having even the slightest hint of a bedsore--and the doctor would pull me up! it was a sign of a lapse in nursing care. for care givers at home, or if you have a loved one in the hospital, it is emotionally painful to see loved ones suffer. The prevention of a bedsore is easier than its treatment. Patients, need to be turned either two hourly or fourth hourly depending on thier condition, age, weight, and presenting heath condition. avoid moisture--so if a patient passes stools or urine in bed--clean it at once--at all times the patient must be dry. if a patients sweats profusely, it would be good to give a sponge bath, at least twice a day. apply powder on the skin(not sure if this is old treatment, not sure of new trends) Back care helps-massage the back with circular motions. If the patient is unconscious, the hands and legs need to be moved-passive movements. so if you have a loved one in the hospital--be proactive to insist that these simple steps are followed by hospital staff-rem they have nothing to lose if not done--but its your loved one!!! and you are paying for it!!!Dont be so overwhelmed by the hospital system!
