Bedbugs in Amarillo hotels on the rise November 21, 2013 at 7:43 PM AMARILLO - Bedbugs are on the rise in Amarillo hotel and motels. Weve all heard the saying, dont let the bed bugs bite, but for some industries, like the hotel business, this is easier said than done. The Environmental Health Department in Amarillo has already investigated and closed 33 bedbug cases in area hotels and motels. Last year, that number was 22. The increase is something Brad Turner, a local exterminator, who works for Lady Bug Services, says isnt surprising. I-40 is a major corridor that goes across the U.S. so, this is where the tourist stop. Typically a bedbug is a hitch hiker so somebody had to bring that bedbug in. They didnt just show up at the motel, he said. But combating these critters can be a challenge. Especially for hotels, who rent rooms to different travelers almost every day. Its a continuous problem in the hotel and hospitality industry, said Dora Chavarria, who works at the Ambassador Hotel. People dont realize that bed bugs arent created out of thin air, people are carries of that. Preventative measures, like the ones taken at the Ambassador Hotel help to keep the small bugs out of the sheets. We work with the Health Department, we have certified pest control people that we work with, Chavarria said. To help put Amarillos 33 bedbug cases into perspective, Abilenes Environmental Health Department has only has had a total of 18 this year. Colleen Nelson - NewsChannel 10.
