Beefsteak Fungus. When I visit woods, I always like to mooch - TopicsExpress

Beefsteak Fungus. When I visit woods, I always like to mooch around as you never know what you will find. Take this for example, a beefsteak hidden in a decaying tree stump. What made it quite nice, that it was naturally framed. One of my best finds of the day. It is rare that I will use a flash, but being in the middle of the woods is quite dark. The beefsteak is more like an ox tongue in shape, colour and texture, this strange fungus is soft and moist when young, with a rough pinky-red upper side and broad margin. Older ones are firmer, smooth and liver-red-brown, often exuding a blood-red juice. The watery tubes are readily separated from the thick flesh which has the appearance of raw steak. You can usually find these low on the trunk of old living oak and chestnut trees; also like here, on their stumps. They are around 8-20cm thick, and edible ( best simmered, it can be bitter). You can see these from late summer to autumn, not persisting.
