Beekmantown Sports Flashback: (1979) ________________________________________ The Beekmantown Eagles are A SUPER! Awesome, amazing astounding! At that rate and by the manner in which unbelievable. Beekmantown is beating up on its unsuspecting opponents, there wont be any superlatives left to describe the dynamic Eagles by time the curtain falls on the 1979 high school football season. Incredible is the best way to characterize the Eagles in their latest effort. After the sixth week of football, Beekmantown was (6-0) and outscored their opponents 255-16. On Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Cardinals Stadium, Beekmantown continued to dominate its opponents as the Comets of Carthage High School were their latest and last victims as they lost to the Eagles in the North Country Class A Super Bowl. The Beekmantown Eagles, returning to the rule of the roost in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference football after two off years, put the finishing touches on a (7-0-1) regular season. The Eagles have now have won or shared the crown four times in the last seven years. The tough refuse to lose Eagles, have earned their way to play in the inaugural North Country Class A Super Bowl, matching the best team from the Northern Athletic Conference Champions out of Section X, against the best team from the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Champions from Section VII. Beekmantown has a very strong run attack built around their two outstanding running backs. The 511 185 lbs speedy veteran Roger Desroches, a favorite to earn C.V.A.C. honors for the third straight year, led the conference in rushing with 855 yards on 122 carries and 10 touchdowns. Bob Burnell, 62 225lbs, was converted from Offensive Tackle to Fullback this year, rushed for 686 yards on 91 carries and scored 5 rushing touchdowns, he was also a threat out of the backfield at receiving the ball as well, as he caught 3 touchdown receptions. He was also the kicker on points after touchdowns and field goals and did a lot of kicking and getting credit for the points. The two standouts were named Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside, by the media, coaches and fans. They also went by Speedy and The Bull. Desroches was Mr. Outside & Speedy, because of his quick feet out of the backfield and his lightening speed down the sideline for many yards and touchdowns he earned. Burnell was Mr. Inside & The Bull, because when he got the rock, he went right up the gut at linebackers, fearing nothing in his way. His conversion to Fullback definitely paid off for the Eagles this season and made head coach Don Bainbridge look like the Knute Rockne of C.V.A.C. football. The two rushers had a combined 15 rushing touchdowns and gained more ground than any other C.V.A.C. team. The Eagles, who averaged 286.9 yards rushing a game, also had two other rushers with 200 or more yards rushing on the seasons. Jon Seabron and Tom Botten. As a team, the Eagles gained 2,295 yards on the ground and scored 23 touchdowns. The Quarterback was a 60 160lbs sophomore sensation named, Andy Light. Light was 32 of 61 passing the ball for 502 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air. He was only intercepted four times during the regular season. Lights favorite targets were standout WR Bryan Foster and standout WR Joe Burl. Foster had 14 receptions, 200 yards and 7 touchdowns in the regular season. Burl had 9 receptions, 188 yards and 6 touchdowns in the regular season. Beekmantown led the C.V.A.C.s in scoring with 262 points and only allowed 23 points during the regular season. The Eagles also had (5) shutouts during the regular season. They only allowed 679 yards rushing and against the pass, the Eagles were especially strong, yielding just 432 yards and 2 touchdowns in the regular season. Beekmantowns defense gave up only (1) rushing touchdown in their first five games of the season. The other four games were shutouts of (38-0, 35-0, 41-0 and 49-0). The defensive starters were DE Roger Desroches, DT Larry Carter, NG David Rose, DT Terry Brown, DE Mike Sears, OLB Carey Case, OLB Todd Desrocher, ILB Craig Bacon, ILB Mike Gregoire, DB Bryan Foster and DB Joe Burl. With many other reserve players who pitched in on the defense and did an outstanding job as one team. The starting offensive players were QB Andy Light, HB Roger Desroches, FB Bob Burnell, C Ray Meyers, RG Joe Jabaut, LG Mike Gregoire, RT Mike Sears, LT Bill Leege, TE Bryan Foster, SE Joe Burl and FL Jeff Van Woert. The coaching staff was head coach Don Bainbridge, Assistants were Gary Butler and Dan Letourneau. Beekmantown was ranked #13 in the state in the NYSSWA rankings before the North Country Class A Super Bowl and moved up to #9 after their 35-16 defeat of Carthage in the Super Bowl. Carthage were ranked #11 in the state in the NYSSWA rankings before the Super Bowl. It was no doubt an incredible season for the Beekmantown Eagles Football team and hands down one of the best in C.V.A.C. football history! Beekmantown ended their 1979 football campaign undefeated with a record of (8-0-1). It was their first undefeated season, the other undefeated season was in 1984 where they were (10-0). That team won the North Country Class B Super Bowl by defeating the Blue Devils of Ogdensburg 28-6 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. They ended up ranked #10 in the state in small school football. *In 1983 they were undefeated in C.V.A.C. play, but lost to Glens Falls in a crossover regular season. That team finished (9-1). They were the North Country Class B Super Bowl Champions as they defeated the Huskies of Franklin Academy of Malone 31-0 at Bailey Avenue Park in Plattsburgh. They ended up ranked #24 in the state in small school football.
