Been a bit maudlin tonight, not sure what that means but here - TopicsExpress

Been a bit maudlin tonight, not sure what that means but here goes. It is approximately 100 years ago since the Great War, or is it, this year will be anniversary to many battles and wars. Nothing new there then. During a visit to a website that shows many aspects of life I came across a very familiar tune, The Green Fields of France. Now with the troubles in France I thought Nothing New there, the song is contemporary to the Great War and death. But for once I listened very closely to some of the lines and the words they contained. The ones I picked out are below with some minor changes. I was tired when a sit here by your Graveside Young Willy Mc Bride. You were only 19 when you died in 1916, Did you die well and did you die clean. Or was it obscene. Did they sound the Death March as they lowered you down. Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind. Their memories enshrined. Or are you a stranger without even a name. The graveyard is still a No Mans Land. Mans blind indifference to his fellow man. Why? did you die. Why? did you answer the Call. For this war would end wars. Dying in vain. Will it all happen again and again and again and again. You can change the name, the date, the tune mentioned and look deeper at a different meaning of No Mans Land, but when it came the last bit, will it all happen again and again and again and again it really comes home. As one who studies and vainly tries to understand history I remember a play/film about the universal soldier I thought I could understand what it is all about but I know I do not as last the words of the song say it will all happen again. https://youtube/watch?v=ntt3wy-L8Ok
