Been busy visiting family and friends in Bishop, CA this weekend. From a family dinner out, to Grammas 90th Birthday festivities at the church, to meeting new friends in the Mammoth/Bishop area and having them meet my family... Sitting around listening to Grampa share, with total clarity, all the history of this beautiful area stored in his 92 year-old mind... Ive heard many of his stories before, but still love how Grampas face lights up when he gets to share his life. Great family, great new friends, all the good stuff!! Were meeting family for breakfast this morning, then making tracks back home. So, today, Im going to resume my diabetes awareness posts and Im to talk about a LOW blood sugar emergency... Those with type 1 diabetes, or type 2s that have become insulin dependent, are at extreme risk for high and low blood sugar emergencies that may come on suddenly. The ideal target blood sugar range for someone with type 1 diabetes is usually between 90 and 130 mg/dl before meals. However, a range of factors including illness, stress, too much exercise, or too little food can push blood sugar levels dangerously low. Warning Signs of Low Blood Sugar Emergency Headache Sweating Pale, moist skin Cold and Clammy Extreme/sudden hunger Weakness/dizziness Fatigue/drowsiness Rapid pulse rate Blurred/double vision Shallow breathing Confusion/inattention Loss of coordination If the person is conscious and relatively alert have them chew up 3-4 glucose tablets (if the diabetic has them) or eat or drink a fast-acting carbohydrate like sugar (at least two packets), 4-6 ounces of fruit juice or regular soda. Retest blood sugar after 15 minutes and repeat this treatment if needed until the persons blood glucose readings come back up. Do NOT take insulin If unconscious or having a seizure, call 911 immediately and give nothing by mouth. If you have a type 1 in your family, you should own a glucagon pen and know how to use it in an emergency. A glucagon pen is typically only used as a life saving measure when the person is unconscious and cannot swallow anything.
