Been catching up on movies I havent been able to see because of working on my thesis. I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel on Thursday, and all I can say is, Wes Anderson strikes gold once again!!! The huge cast (Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, F. Murray Abraham, Jude Law, Tom Wilkinson, Owen Wilson, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, Soairse Ronan, and newcomer Tony Rovolori) all play their roles extremely well, and while Wes Anderson regulars Bill Murray and Bob Balaban only have cameo roles this time, they shine while theyre on screen), and the writing and direction are as sharp as ever. The production design and costumes are gorgeous, and I hope Oscar voters remember them next year, as well as this whole movie. Its the best film Ive seen so far this year. I also saw Ride Along last night, and oh my word, it was extremely boring!!! Kevin Hart and Ice Cubes fast-talking schtick gets old really quickly, and the editing during the action scenes is so choppy its hard to tell whats going on. Clearly these filmmakers never watched movies like Bullitt, The French Connection and Speed, great films that featured iconic chase scenes that all won Oscars for Best Film Editing. If film schools dont require editors-in-training to watch those movies, they should start doing that now! In those films, the chases were epic, but edited well so that the audience could clearly see what was going on. The only redeeming factor in this film is Laurence Fishburne, and until he came along, I was so bored by the movie that I had forgotten his name was in the opening credits. Thank goodness I only paid $2.50 to see this movie, as it was playing at a movie theater in my area that plays movies right around the time theyre released on DVD, after theyve played in all the other theaters.
